Prof. Zhang Lichen has long been engaged in the creation, teaching, and theoretical research of Chinese painting. He emphasizes returning to the "essential principles and characteristics" of Chinese painting within the contemporary context for a renewed understanding, proposing academic concepts such as "brush and ink structure," "black and white strategy," "two-fold deification," and "imagery thinking." As an artist and educator who has long been involved in the development of Chinese painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, he has continuously refined his theories in teaching practices since he began teaching at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1977. His academic achievements have also provided important references for related research at the CAFA School of Chinese Painting, as well as for discussions on the "three-in-one" teaching system of copying, sketching, and creation.

Zhejiang People's Fine Arts Publishing House has successively published Brush, Ink and Composition in Pan Tianshou's Paintings, Research on the Principles and Methods of Chinese Painting, and On the Structure of Brush and Ink in Chinese Painting since 2022, which comprehensively showcase Prof. Zhang's systematic construction from creative practice to theoretical analysis. Starting from the basic elements of brush and ink, the training chain, and the rules of composition, he unfolds a layer-by-layer deduction and methodological summary of "brush and ink structure" and the system of principles and methods of Chinese painting. His series of publications are of positive significance for in-depth research into the theoretical laws and esthetic value of the intrinsic expression of Chinese painting which will further promote the inheritance and development of Chinese painting in the new era.
